The B&S gauge (aka American Standard gauge) is a simple tool to use.  Simply, push your metal or wire into a slot, if it slides in, that’s NOT the gauge.  Keep moving down in gauge until you reach the first slot that the metal DOESN’T fit into:  that’s your gauge!

You’ll need to use one if you are looking for a certain size wire, to check jump ring gauge, metal gauge, etc.  You either need to track your wire and metal sizes really well, or purchase one of these.  I use mine all the time!

You can also use calipers to measure your metal – sheet or wire too.  Digital calipers allow for extremely accurate measuring.  But, you’ll need to translate that measurement into a gauge, if you are looking for wire or sheet that is a particular size.
